The Hague, Adrian Moetjens, 1685. 12mo. Engr. front,+ (10),+ 486,+ (4) pp. Spotting and some ink numbering in the margin. Leaf (4) with paper repair in margin. Worn contemporary half calf, spine with. beige label. Spine with a crack and tear at lower front hinge. From the library of von Koch at Augerum. Later, but still early edition of Du Ryers French translation of the Qur’ân. The first edtion was published in 1649 and it was reprinted in 22 editions up until 1775. André du Ryer was French consul in Alexandria, Cairo and Byzantium, and he made numerous travels through the Middle East and learned Arabic and Turkish. He returned to Paris in 1630 and become Royal interpreter for Oriental languages. Beside his translation of the Qu’rân he published a Turkish grammar and a translation of Gulistan by Saadi.
