About This Item
Edinburgh: John Ballantyne, 1810. First Edition. 4to, pp. 290, cxxix. Copious notes. Frontis portrait. Off-setting to the title-page from the portrait, some contemporary notes on the verso to the half-title. Bound in contemporary full calf (covers separate and first signature separate, amorial bookplate). The interior is nice and clean with wide margins. Tinker 1865;. The Lady of the Lake marked the height of Scott's popularity as a poet. 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry, and Scott's fame spread beyond Great Britain to the United States. In the Edinburgh Review, Francis Jeffrey felt it far exceeded its predecessors: the story was 'constructed with infinitely more skill and address' and there was 'a larger variety of characters, more artfully and judiciously contrasted' The poem is considered by critics to be "the most interesting, romantic, picturesque, and graceful" of Scott's works, as well as the most read (Thomson); it is a perfect guide-book to the fairy scene of the Trosachs and Loch Katrine in the Western Highlands of Perthshire.
