About This Item

J.W.Bradley, Philadelphia, ca.1847. Good. The Lady at Home, with the pseud. of Mary Mary Elmwood, has 178 p., clean and unmarked except for foxing; followed by A Year After Marriage as well as other stories, possibly from Godey's Lady's Book, to which the author contributed until he established Arthur's Home Magazine. He is best known for his temperance novel Ten Nights in a Barroom. The stories here comprise Fanny Dale, or A Year After Marriage, 130 p., clean and unmarked; and The Young Music Teacher, and Other Tales (The Unhappy Wife; Life's First, Best Lesson; Ups and Downs; The Gift of Beauty; A Leaf from the Book of Human Life; The Father's Dream; I'll See About It; The Sum of Trifles, or, A Penny Saved is a Penny Gained, 182 p. Page 23-24 of The Young Music Teacher is missing and p. 25-26 has a large closed tear; p.27-28, which would end that story and begin "The Unhappy Wife is missing; pp. 178-182 of "A Sum of Trifles shows chipping with small open tear at bottom margin. End papers and t.p. are missing; excellent paper is strong and white, but foxed. What might be a cigarette or cigarillo burn is on following unnumbered pages, which catalog offering by the publishers--including "Dr. Livingstone's Travels and Researches of Sixteen years in the Wilds of South Africa, and "Public and Private History of Napoleon the Third." The last two unnumbered pages have corners removed. Gutters are cracked but text-block firm; leather boards are much scuffed and bumped, with many notations and even scribbling on inside. This rarity deserves rebinding.
