Frontispiece by Oscar Wilson. London, Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, New York and Melbourne, N.D. [1904]. Advertisement leaf, blank on verso, precedes half-title; half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard; pp.294; bright violet buckram, ruled and blocked white, lettered gilt, on front cover and spine, elaborately blocked blind on front cover; ruled blind on spine. Spine a trifle dulled and faded and with vertical wrinkle near foot; small closed tear to fore-margin of half-title; otherwise a virtually fine copy. A humorous, but very readable novel of burglary, imprisonment, and the subsequent attempts of the thieves to recover a box of stolen jewels from the place where they had buried it, which in the mean time has been built-over and become the site of a non-conformist chapel. According to the English Catalogue of books this title was published in May, 1904. COPAC records only three copies, to all of which it assigns the date [1905] this being presumably the point at which the publishers got around to sending the deposit copies. Hubin, p.410, giving the same date as ourselves.
All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.
