About This Item

London; Hodder & Stoughton, 1919., 1919. Hardcover. ASSOCIATION COPY. Undated c. 1919. Octavo. 14 illustrations including frontispiece photographic portrait of Grenfell. Original dark red cloth with gilt titles and line decoration; blind-stamped lines to upper board. Cover cloth lightly surface soiled and spine sunned; edges rubbed, corners and head/tail of spine worn and joints starting. Small damp marks to rear board. Light foxing, mainly to endpapers; rear pastedown slightly wrinkled. Undated, 1919. Pencilled signature of Emily Shackleton to ffep and following leaf together with the address Manor Heath, Eccles and date December 1921. Emily was the wife of celebrated explorer Ernest Shackleton and in December 1921 she was at the Shackleton family home, built in the 1890s near their engine-making firm in Eccles, reading about Grenfell's experiences whilst awaiting the return of her husband. Poignantly, Emily inscribed the book whilst Ernest was on his final fatal expedition to the Antarctic; he died in January 1922 and was buried at South Georgia at the request of his wife. A relatively unremarkable book with a notable association.
