About This Item
Khartoum, Sudan: Khartoum University Press, 1971. Perfect-bound [octavo] in illustrated yellow woven wrappers, 75 pp. Very Good or better, mild toning and edge wear, dog-ears to pp 49, 51.. Cover designed by O. Shibir. History of the prior three decades of student organizing and the Khartoum University Student Union at Khartoum University in Sudan, formerly known as Gordon Memorial College -- the oldest University in Sudan, established by the British colonial government in 1902. Salah El Din El Zein El Tayeb, at the time of authorship, was already a distinguished student organizer and leader, having served as KUSU's Vice President for Cultural Affairs (1966), KUSU's General Secretary (1967), Political Secretary and Vice-President for the Socialist Union (1966-67), and President of the Students' Council.
The site of some of the earliest student protesting in the country (with salary discrepancies between British and Sudanese officials at its heart) in the late 1930s, the Khartoum University Student Union was formed soon after and became a formidable voice for change in Sudan throughout the decolonization period and the turbulent changes in national leadership after. Moving through Marxist and Marcusean analyses of the movement, El Tayeb situates the recent history of student organizing in tothe present situation for the political body, calling for galvanization against "subordination to the present regime" as its only viable future option.
