About This Item
A book of philosophical poems on a Jewish theme by the poet Samuel Zalmanovich Galkin (1897-1960). A native of the Hasidic environment, he wrote in Hebrew, then in Yiddish and Russian. Together with other members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, he was arrested in 1949, but once in the prison hospital, he escaped execution. He served time in the Abez camp, where he became close friends with the philosopher L.P. Karsavin (1882-1952). In 1955 he was rehabilitated and returned to Moscow. He is considered one of the greatest Jewish poets of the XX century . Galkin's name was included in the "Alphabetical list of authors, all whose works are withdrawn from libraries and the bookselling network" (See Blum A.V. The Jewish Question Under Soviet Censorship: 1917-1991). With the inscription of the author - to the artist of this book P.A. Maslyanenko (1937). The only edition of the collection, a rarity. Worldcat shows only one copy in Harvard University.
