First Edition; 8vo; pp. xviii (last page blank), 176 (last page blank); b/w frontispiece, numerous drawings (some full-page others within the text), index; original red cloth, title in gilt on spine, spine and corners bumped, a good copy. The author Travelling before the mast in 1859 on the Oriental he arrives at Melbourne where he braves the large number of shark fins and swims a mile to shore at Saint Kilda Beach and goes to the diggings at Bendigo, a paddle the start of the Hill End rush, Ned Kelly, Aboriginal skeleton and kangaroo dances, steamer on the Murray, joins a theatrical group, Harry Power, Morgan the bushrangers and much more including murderess Maria Needles who is hung.
