About This Item

San Francisco: Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, 1995 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition by this publisher, possibly later printing. First published by Chronicle Books in 1984. Oblong quarto. 143pp. 41 detailed photographic plates. Dark brown boards, lettered in silver. A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Darius Kinsey (1869-1945) was a photographer (in partnership with his wife, Tabitha) active in western Washington state from 1890 to 1940. He is best known for his large-format images of loggers and phases of the region's lumber industry. He also photographed locomotives and landscapes and (especially early in his career) did studio work. This work includes handsome reproductions of Kinsey's photos of the logging industry's steam locomotives, accompanied with historical essays by John Labbe on each locomotive and the logging operations it served, and excerpts from conversations with some of the old-time engineers, firemen, and brakemen..
