First edition, first state (Younger & Hirsch 47). Inscribed and signed by author on verso of front free endpaper ('For Sally, with best wishes - Dr. Seuss'). Purchased from Sally's brother. Lacks jacket. Ink name on front endpaper, 2 inch closed tear on final page along binding edge, a couple light spots on rear board. 1939 Large Hardcover. Unpaginated. Yellow and red cloth. Dr. Seuss's third book, written in prose instead of his trademark verse, but still boasting his unmistakable style of illustration. The King's Stilts tells the story of King Birtram of Binn, who dedicates himself to safeguarding his kingdom, which lives in a precarious existence. It is surrounded by water, which is held back from flooding the land by a ring of dike trees, which are in turn subject to attack from flocks of nizzards. To protect the kingdom, a legion of Patrol Cats is organized to keep the nizzards at bay, and King Birtram sees to their care personally.

Synopsis

Theodor Seuss Geisel-aka Dr. Seuss-is, quite simply, one of the most beloved children's book authors of all time. The forty-four books he wrote and illustrated under the name Dr. Seuss (and others that he wrote but did not illustrate, including some under the pseudonyms Theo. LeSieg and Rosetta Stone) have been translated into thirty languages. Hundreds of millions of copies have found their way into homes and hearts around the world. Dr. Seuss's long list of awards includes Caldecott Honors for McElligot's Pool, If I Ran the Zoo, and Bartholomew and the Oobleck; the Pulitzer Prize; and eight honorary doctorates. We opened our first 'brick and mortar' storefront in December of 2008 in our hometown of Webster, NY.Owner Jonathan Smalter is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America (ABAA), former vice president of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA), both of which are trade organizations created to promote ethical online selling practices, and to encourage continuing education among fellow booksellers. He is also a 2011 graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS).
