About This Item

New York: Hurst & Co., Publishers, 1887. One of Haggard's most popular and famed novels. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of a reprinted edition, probably an early pirate. There is no publication date, but there is a gift inscription on the first free endpaper that is dated 1887, two years after the original publication. Brown cloth decorative binding [possibly originally maroon] nicely stamped in black and designated as "Arlington Edition." Stamping on the spine, with the titling in a gilt label. Clean text; 177 pages, with a 12-page publisher catalog in the rear. The textblock is stiff and heavily toned. Typical of early reprints and pirates, care was given by the publisher to employ a lovely decorative binding, while neglecting quality paper stock. An interesting printing for the Haggard completist.. Reprint Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Synopsis

King Solomon's Mines (1885) is a popular novel by the Victorian adventure writer and fabulist, Sir H. Rider Haggard. It tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. It is the first English fictional adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered to be the genesis of the Lost World literary genre.
