King, Queen, Knave by Vladimir Nabokov - 1968

Hardcover first American edition, published by McGraw-Hill, 1968. Originally published in 1928, this is the 1968 English translation. The story of the marriage of Martha and Kurt Dreyer, and Martha's plans to murder Kurt. Stated 'First Edition' on the copyright page, along with the code 45715 printed on the same line. The dust jacket is intact, though it has been price clipped on the front flap. Bottom text edge is smooth. This copy is somewhat confusing as the back flap of the jacket has 'Book-Of-The Month' printed on the top edge. However, there are no additional points to indicate that this is a club edition, for example there is no blind stamp mark on the back cover board. The bottom edge of the text block being smooth, (instead of rough which would indicate a first edition - first printing), is a point that this is a first edition - second state. Difficult to be absolutely certain without the key point of the printed price on the front flap. Slate gray cloth covered boards, with black cloth covered spine. Title and author name in gold on the spine. '45715' code is printed on the bottom corner of the back cover board. Jacket has a 1-1/2" tear at the back left bottom corner. Creases and a small shallow chip at the head of the spine panel. Jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Very mild bumping to the bottom corners of the cover boards. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Orange-red colored heavy weight paste-down and end papers. Rough edges to the fore edge of the text block. Orange-red top-stain has faded. Binding is tight and square. This is not a library discard copy, not a remainder. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
