The King Island villagers were worried -- the freighter making her last trip before the ice set in was anchored in the storm tossed Bering Sea unable to approach the island. The waves were so high the villagers could not even go out in their largest boats. And the new priest for whom they had been waiting was stranded on the ship. Without him there could be no proper Christmas. A daring idea was formed -- take the strongest men and carry the largest oomiak cross country to the far shore and see of the freighter could approach there.
