Phillip Parker was the son of Philip Gidley King, the third governor of New South Wales, and godson of Authur Phillip, the first governor. Unlike Cook and Flinders, who were Englishmen exploring a remote shore, King was Australian-born. Indeed he was the first native born Australian to achieve flag rank in the Royal Navy.
