About This Item

London: HarperCollins, 1991. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Fine. 9.5" by 6.5". Not Stated. A near fine, first edition copy of this semi-autobiographical work by British writer, J.G. Ballard. Signed by the author to the title page and in the original dust wrapper. Presenting this semi-autobiographical work by noted British author, J.G. Ballard. It is a sequel to his earlier 1984 novel, Empire of the Sun, and tells the story of the author's childhood in China and his move to England in adulthood. It includes themes of sex and death, and Ballard has stated that this work is the story of his life 'seen through the mirror of the fiction prompted by the life'. The first edition, first printing of this work. Signed by the author to the title page. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with no discernible shelf wear. Original unclipped dust wrapper is excellent and bright, with just a small amount of edgewear to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. A few light spots to the fore-edge, not affecting the pages, which are slightly age-toned to the edges, but otherwise are completely clean. Near Fine

Synopsis

Ballard here writes a brilliant hybrid of autobiography and fiction. The sequel to The Empire of the Sun, this work puts his earlier account of a boy’s experiences in occupied Shanghai in the context of a lifetime. Ballard’s eye has never been more cinematic, and his writing, especially in the love scenes, is a masterful blend of the raw and the tender.
