About This Item

Penguin Press, 2011. First edition. Hardback. New/new. New in dust jacket. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE HALF-TITLE PAGE. Hardcover. 373 pp. The authors second novel. "The Kid" brings us deep into the interior life of Abdul Jones, African American son of Sapphire's unforgettable heroine, Precious, the protagonist of the author's first book, "Push". We meet her son Abdul at age nine when, after his mother's funeral, he is left alone on the Mississippi dirt farm on which he was raised. He is put into a foster home and then a Catholic orphanage. The resulting tale of abuse is brutal and sex becomes for him a "compulsive collision of pain and pleasure" and he spirals into mental and emotional crises. The author's first novel, "The Push" (1993) was the basis for the 2009 film "Precious", winner of Academy Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique).
