About This Item

London: Michael Joseph, 1968. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with silver spine lettering. A VG+ copy (very slight spine fade and a hint of foxing to the page block edges in like price-clipped D/W with none of the usual fading to the brown portion of the spine its only noteworthy fault being a chip from the top/middle of the back panel. No inscriptions. Still a nice copy of an iconic 60's cult novel and scarce in this condition. [The basis for the 1969 movie, Kes, directed by Ken Loach and starring David Bradley, the late Brian Glover and Colin Welland. A true classic of post-war British cinema with its pertinent and fiercely unsentimental portrait of Northern working-class life and its almost incomprehensible Northern dialect. Everyone remembers the famous football sequence with the late Brian Glover hilariously impersonating Bobby Charlton]. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Synopsis

Life is tough and cheerless for Billy Casper, a disillusioned teenager growing up in a small Yorkshire mining town. Violence is commonplace and he is frequently cold and hungry. Yet he is determined to be a survivor and when he finds Kes, a kestrel hawk he discovers a passion in life. Billy identifies with her proud silence and she inspired in him the trust and love that nothing else can. Intense and raw and bitingly honest, A KETREL FOR A KNAVE was first published in 1968 and was also madeinto a highly acclaimed film, 'Kes', directed by Ken Loach.
