Quarto, xvi, 183 pages, VG; beautifully bound in an elaborate full morocco-gilt Kelliegram binding, featuring an eight-color morocco inlaid cover portrait to the front board and a seven-color morocco inlaid cover portrait to the rear; rebacked with spine preserved; mild bumping to corners, slight rubbing to spine; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; gilt Kelliegram signature stamped to the rear board's lower turn-in;

Consignment; shelved case 3. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Two plates have been neatly excised (The complicated Richardson, and, Frontis-piss) as is often the case, else a very sound example .

An early collection of the works of Hogarth, with many of the engravings made by Samuel Ireland (1744 - 1800), based on items from Ireland's personal collection. Ireland was himself an accomplished artist, writing and illustration "A Picturesque Tour Through Holland, Brabant, & c", and "The Picturesque Beauties of the Rivers Thames and Medway." Prints include a wide range of subjects: portraits, shop bills, coat of arms, funeral tickets, allegorical scenes caricatures, etc. 4to, xvi,183pp, with 57 plates, some aquatint, one folding. With a half-title. A second volume was published in 1799. Original full brown calf, gilt title at red spine label (slightly chipped). Original half red morocco over rose cloth, spines lettered in gilt with elaborately gilt decorated compartments. Top edges gilt. This set is Illustrated with over 150 steel and copper plate engravings, printed on India Paper, mounted on leaves of heavy paper stock. Each plate has a tissue guard printed in red. Each title page is printed in red & black and with a copper engraved vignette. This deluxe edition is limited to 1,000 numbered sets (this being #46). Some of the outer hinges and spine extremities are lightly rubbed, and the outer front hinge of Vol. X is cracked but holding soundly. All in all, a very attractive set.
