London: Gollancz, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/good. 8vo, 464 pp, with 48 b/w plates from photographs; indexed. A very good copy with mild sunning to the spine, some foxing on the edges of the text block. In the very scarce dust jacket, which has internal tape reinforcements and chips missing from the head and foot of the spine and one corner of the front panel. Account of the unsuccessful 1930 International Himalaya Expedition led by Gunter Dyrenfurth, which was plagued by bad weather, an avalanche, and other mishaps. Smythe describes the extensive preparations for the expedition, the Himalayan scenery, travels in the region--including a visit to the Pemayangste Monastery, and the party's successful ascent of Jonsong (24,344 feet).
