About This Item
Cambridge: The Belknap Press of Harvard University, 1957. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. xii, 330pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Faintest of binding wear, though tight and internally fine. Tight and nice first edition of the first volume of a highly-regarded biography by Holmes' former secretary (second volume not published until 1963). This intriguing comes from the library of U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021) and bears an interesting presentation inscription on front pastedown to Stevenson's father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate: "Christmas -- 1957 / For Adlai -- / With all good wishes / Walter V Schaefer." Schaefer (1904-86) was a Northwest University law professor who became Governor Stevenson's chief legislative aide -- his work impressed The Gov so much that in 1951 he appointed him to the Illinois Supreme Court, a post he filled for 25 years. In 1957 Stevenson had just lost his second bid for the presidency, but certainly Schaefer was grateful to the man who appointed him to a prestigious position he occupied for a quarter century.
