About This Item
New York: The Telegraph Press, 1936. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Good. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To Ms. Liveright, who may find readers of this [?] in her family circle, with the warm regards of her old boss, Gifford Pinchot, July 1936." Alice F. Liveright was a committed social activist appointed by Pinchot as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Welfare from 1931-1935, the years he was in office as governor (several decades after his time as Forest Service Chief) and just proceeding the publication of this book. A nice association as such. Pinchot was a passionate angler his whole life and this book share his experiences in twenty-three essays that range from Pennsylvania to the South Seas, described on the jacket as "ideal armchair entertainment for every man or woman who loves the outdoors." Rough tweed cloth with black lettering, illustrated with black and white photos. A very good or better book with only toning to pages, in a good or better price-clipped jacket with with wear to all edges and tape reinforcement, as well as a small newspaper clipping related to Pinchot affixed light to top of rear flap.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
