About This Item

New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First edition, second issue with the broken type on the copyright page. An ardent activist, champion of political reform, novelist, and progressive journalist, Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) is best known for this devastating expose of the meat-packing industry. The novel was a shocking revelation of intolerable labor practices and unsanitary working conditions in the Chicago stockyards. It quickly became a bestseller, arousing public sentiment and resulting in such federal legislation as the Pure Food and Drug Act. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with pictorial black and white stamping. An especially crisp and bright example, with a bit of rubbing to the white stamping.

Synopsis

The Jungle is a 1906 novel written by author and journalist Upton Sinclair. This novel was intended to highlight the poverty and misery of the immigrant working class, but ultimately became more known as an expose of the American meatpacking industry during the early-20th century.
