About This Item

Random House, 1999, 1999. Hardcover. As New/Near Fine. Royal octavo, hardcover, fine, as new, in near fine black pictorial dj. 368 pp. plus notes on author and editor. Juneteenth, the Senator said, closing his eyes, his bandaged head resting beneath his hands. Words of Emancipation didn't arrive until the middle of June, so they called it Juneteenth. in the 1950s, Adam Sunraider, a race-baiting senator from a New England state, is mortally wounded by an assassin's bullet while making a speech on the Senate floor. To the shock of all who think they know him, Sunraider calls out from his deathbed for Hickman, an old black minister, to be brought to his side.

Synopsis

Ralph Ellison, known best for The Invisible Man , wrote most of Juneteenth but reported the manuscript lost in a fire in 1964. The version of Juneteenth: A Novel that we know today was compiled by Ellison's friend John F. Callahan. He used the 2,000+ pages that Ellison left behind to arrange, edit and publish Juneteenth posthumously.
