About This Item

Grosset & Dunlap, 1943-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Vintage Wartime Hardcover with DJ, (Dust Jacket A, Format IV per AXE) 1943 Grosset & Dunlap 207 pages. Very Good, in a VG DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to thin orange red paper boards with blue titles and accents - corners sharp. Only flaw is a small abrasion at the lower RH corner of the front cover that obscures the "Y" in mystery. Dark blue topstain is lightly faded. Minor shelf/edge wear and dust soiling to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean, unmarked and age-toned due to wartime paper. NOTE: This is the last DJ to have a white spine with the small Judy Bolton head symbol on it. DJ flap reads P.C.J. at top and 110-150 at bottom and is stamped .60 cents. DJ illustrator is Pelagie Doane. Blue endpapers with white line drawings (haunted house). Back panel of DJ lists Beverly Gray to Beverly Gray's Problem - published in 1943. Front inside flap of DJ lists Judy Bolton to Secret of the Barred Window. Rear DJ flap lists Dana Girls to The Portrait In The Sand also published in 1943. This is the 16th book in a series of 38. Per AXE, this is binding variant IV with wartime paper, haunted house cover and endpapers and plain frontispiece. DJ is Variant A. See my photos to come. The Judy Bolton Mystery Series, written by Margaret Sutton, follows a realistic young woman who solves mysteries. Although the series was not quite as popular as Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton has been called a more complex and believable role model for girls. Judy was also unique in that halfway through the series, she married (something series book heroines rarely, if ever, did) The 38-volume series was written from 1932 and 1967 and is the longest-lasting juvenile mystery series written by an individual author. Handsome vintage wartime copy in DJ. LOC SSS-10
