About This Item

Harper & Row, New York, 1963. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition, BCE. Dust jacket condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket has one-inch closed-end tear from bottom edge on front cover and a sunned spine. 308 pp. Text lightly yellowed as typical of paper quality used. Clean, unmarked with no owner attribution. The book follows the first year of the marriage of Brooklynites Annie McGairy and Carl Brown, in 1927. Although both of their families are against their marriage, the couple weds anyways and move to the Midwest where Carl is studying to become a lawyer. They quickly discover the difficulty of balancing college life with marriage. This is Betty Smith's fourth and final novel written before her death in 1972. She became most famous for her first novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. "What the reader takes away from Joy in the Morning is its sunny tenderness, Carl's decency and determination, Annie's freshness and warmth. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was Francie Nolan's story. One might call Joy in the Morning the story of Francie's younger sister." The book was made into a film in 1965, starring Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux.
