Red cloth covered boards with gold printing on the spine; spine is bumped but binding is tight and square. Camel end papers. Illustrated with reproductions of the original engravings by E. Riou. Dodd, Mead hard cover with dust jacket, 1959 edition but 1979 printing, 242 pages. 8vo (5.5" x 8.5") Unabridged reprinting of the first English translation, first published by Griffith and Farran in 1871 or 1872. The translator is unknown. Includes an introduction by Arthur C. Clarke. Originally published in France as Voyage au centre de la Terre, #3 in Verne's series of novels called Voyages Extraordinaires.
Synopsis
Journey to the Centre of the Earth, also translated as A Journey to the Interior of the Earth, is a classic 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves a German professor (Otto Lidenbrock in the original French, Professor Von Hardwigg in the most common English translation) who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the center of the Earth.
