About This Item

London: Doubleday and Company, 1943. First edition. Fine Binding. Near Fine. 9" by 6". None. A sumptuously bound first edition copy of Eve Curie's work of contemporary war reportage during 1941-1942. From the library of socialite Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Signed by the author to the half title 'Audrey, With love from Eve'. In a fine binding by renowned firm Sangorski and Sutcliffe as a Christmas gift from Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He was a close friend Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie and bound several books for her as gifts. He has gilt stamped 'Xmas S.B 1943' to the front pastedown in lieu of the regular Sangorski and Sutcliffe binding stamp. Bookplate of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie to the front endpaper. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field) at Julian"s Park. Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey had links to royalty and was alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII.  She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. With the original map endpapers bound in to the rear. This work recounts Eve Curie's trip to Africa, the Near East, Soviet Union, China, Burma and India from November 1941 to April 1942.  Curie, the daughter of Marie Curie, fought Nazism as a journalist by publishing articles and giving lectures.  This trip was planned so that Curie could report in countries where war was waging. She initially wrote several newspaper reports before publishing this book in 1943. In a full morocco binding. Externally, excellent with a few light marks to the spine and front board. Spine is lightly faded. Bookplate to the front endpaper. Author's signature to half-title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
