About This Item

London: Printed for A.Millar, 1755., 1755. 12mo. pp. 2 p.l., iv, xvii, [1]blank], [19]-240, 193-228. with half-title. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary sprinkled calf (repair to upper front joint, small chip to head of spine, some rough patches on rear cover, short marginal tear in 1 prelim; overall a nice copy). First Edition. The present edition, with text altered from the original, partially by John, Henry Fielding’s half-brother, was printed second but issued first. The unedited version, which was printed first, was initially suppressed in favour of the edited text, but issued later in response to the demand promoted by the Lisbon earthquake in November." Fielding left with his wife for Lisbon in June of 1754, hoping to improve his health in a warmer climate. "The incidents of his voyage are detailed with great humor and with undiminished interest in life…Mr. Austin Dobson rightly says that [the Journal] is one 'of the most unfeigned and touching little tracts in our own or any other literature.’" [DNB]. Fielding died in Lisbon two months after his arrival. Rothschild 857. NCBEL II 931.. 1st Edition.
