About This Item

New York: Oxford University Press, 1971. FIRST EDITION with dust jacket. Full green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Tiny closed tear to the bottom of the spine, sticker residue on front endpages. 6 text maps, 4 plates. Bright and tight with no previous owner's marks, no underlining or highlighting. Jacket hast been price-clipped and there is clear tape reinforcement to the top & bottom of the spine with much general light wear. Overall a VERY GOOD book in a FAIR dust jacket. Joseph Thomson (February 14, 1858 - August 2, 1895) was a Scottish geologist and explorer who played an important part in the Scramble for Africa. Thomson's Gazelle is named for him. Excelling as an explorer rather than an exact scientist, he avoided confrontations among his porters or with indigenous peoples. His motto was He who goes gently, goes safely; he who goes safely goes far. . First Edition. Full Cloth. Very Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover.
