About This Item

London: George Routledge and Sons, 1869. A Near Fine Hardcover. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket Issued. Illustrations by Henry Alken..
Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, these stories originally published in the New Sporting Magazine.

Rebound in period leather by Bumpus; five raised spine bands, titles in gilt. Hint of sun-fading on the spine. Minor corner rubs. Original cloth front and spine laid-in at the rear. Top edge gilt. Bookseller notations on Front Free Endpage. Foxing on the preliminaries. Minor foxing on the borders of plates. Bindings tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate handling wear. Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Sixteen Colored Illustrations by Henry Alken including frontispiece and vignette title page.. Background Information:
The Bumpus Bookshop of Oxford Street, London enjoyed a reputation for handsome bindings in classical styles from its foundation in 1780 until the 20th century. In fact the 'bindery' never produced a single binding, instead outsourcing to the likes of Rivière, and Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a masterpiece of delegation. [Quaritch] Henry Thomas Alken was an English painted and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes.
