About This Item

Thorndike, Maine: Thorndike Press, 1994. First Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Published. 5 3/4" x 8 3/4. 281 Pages. Gift quality condition. Laminated pictorial front cover is from a mural by David Wagner. This Large Print Book carries the Seal of Approval of N.A.V.H. This historical novel is set in Connecticut in the summer of 1781 and has at its heart the true story of the massacre of the American militia at the hands of Benedict Arnold and his soldiers. A dramatic episode that launches the friendship between 11-year- old Billy Latham, son of a militia captain, and ex-slave Jordan Freeman, servant to local militia colonel William Ledyard, opens the story. Through an idyllic summer the friendship ripens as the shadow of war looms over the coastal town. Billy's strong ties to Fort Griswold are deepened when Jordan joins the militia. As Benedict Arnold leads a group of mercenaries, 900 strong, in an attack on the fort, Billy's and Jordan's loyalty is demonstrated by an act of disobedience which could easily cost them their lives.
