New York: The Modern Library, 1996. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Modern Library edition, the commemorative edition with an introduction by William Maxwell. 186pp. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Gould was an eccentric American writer who lived (often homeless) in Greenwich Village in the early 1900s. He spent his days observing and listening to random people's conversations while writing it all down. He is credited with the term "oral history" and claimed to be the author of the longest book ever written entitled *An Oral History of the Contemporary World.*.

Synopsis

Joseph Mitchell was born in North Carolina and moved to New York City in 1929.  He died in 1996.
