London: Printed for H.D. Symonds, 1792. 3 vols. bound as 1, 8vo, pp. [xvi], 106, 106*-106*, 107-188, [1], [xxx], 186, [iv], 210. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. Final leaf sometime repaired, a few letters restored in ink, some scattered toning and soiling. Somewhat rubbed, worn to extremities, front hinge splitting at foot but cords firm, head of spine bumped and torn. Ownership inscriptions of Gilbert East to flyleaf (dated 1792) and 2 title-pages, inscription of John Williams to verso of half-title of vol. 2, name of James Gow[?] partially trimmed from head of title-page of vol. 1. Charles Piggott (d. 1794) ‘issued, anonymously, the popular satire, The Jockey Club (1792) [...] which offered a scurrilous account of élite London society, with which he seems to have been well acquainted’ (ODNB). It was a great success upon publication and reached a tenth edition within the year. This is a mixed set of all three parts (a supplementary volume, ‘The Female Jockey Club’, was issued in 1794) comprising of the fifth edition of Part 1, the first edition of Part 2 and the second edition of Part 3, bound together in the year of publication. It passed through the hands of Gilbert East, possibly the Berkshire cricketer (1763-1828). ESTC T125820; N29110; T76061.
