About This Item
London: Jackson and Walford, 1839. First edition. Cloth. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. Very scarce first edition of this work in which John Campbell enumerates the importance of laymen in the spread of the gospel. First Edition. Very Scarce. Although no author is given, the work is generally attributed to 19th century Congregationalist minister John Campbell as he often referred to himself as the 'author of Jethro' in subsequent publications. Campbell founded and edited several religious magazines and journals, and has been dubbed as a kind of press baron of the Congregationalist church. In this work, Campbell enumerates how laymen can aid in the efficient running of Congregationalist churches and help spread the gospel across Britain. Prior owner's inscription on front pastedown 'Mr Paul Bottisham' Original cloth binding. Externally sound, with some rubbing and light marks to the boards and spine. Wear to both the head and tail of the spine, with a small amount of loss to both. Extremities a little worn. Front joint starting slightly, and both hinges starting but firm. Prior owner's inscription on front pastedown 'Mr Paul Bottisham'. Internally, generally firmly bound, a little more strained to pages 72/73 and168/169. Pages generally bright and clean, with some spotting, predominantly limited to the front and the rear. Good
