About This Item

New York: Press of the Pioneers, 1936., 1936. First edition. First edition. Cloth, 233pp., illus. A classic, this work was the first full-length biography of this important mountain man and explorer. A giant among men, he was discoverer of the central route from the Rockies to the Pacific; leaders of the party which made effective discovery of the South Pass; the first white man to cross Nevada; the first to traverse Utah from north to south, and from west to east; the first American to enter California by the overland route; the first white man to conquer the High Sierras and the first to explore the Pacific Slope from San Diego to Vancouver. This fine account helped further public awareness of the importance of the accomplishments of Jedediah Strong Smith. A near fine copy. Light general soiling and light wear to the edges and corners of dust jacket.
