A leading geneticist of the inter-war years and a physicologist who used himself as hjis own guinea-pig, he was also one of the most-read popular science writers since T. H. Huxley, a dedicated supporter of the Republican Government during the Spanish Civil War, and for some years Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Daily Worker. In 1957 he emigrated to India, where he later took Indian nationality.
