About This Item
Fribourg: Office Du Livre, 1977 4to (31.5 cm), 608 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). The illuminated manuscripts housed at Waddesdon Manor, a collection that has remained largely unknown and unpublished, constitute only a third of the splendid assortment initiated by Baron James Mayer de Rothschild (d. 1868) and expanded by his son Baron Edmond (1845-1934). Many of these manuscripts stand as exemplary products from significant publishing houses and workshops of the later Middle Ages, valued for both their texts and the opulence of their illumination. This catalogue marks a reorientation in the study of manuscripts, organizing descriptions in a manner that accentuates the history of the medieval book. The components of the manuscripts, including technical elements, texts, and illustrations, are analyzed in the sequence of their production. Accompanying commentaries after each description seek to interpret the manuscripts, aiming to introduce the less specialized reader to this relatively obscure facet of artistic production and social life in the Middle Ages.
