About This Item
London: David Nutt for the Folk-Lore Society, 1907. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo, original publisher's brick red/brown cloth with gilt and black decoration and gilt spine titles. Untrimmed fore edge. 288pp. A publication of the Folk Lore Society for Collecting and Printing Relics of Popular Antiquities. No. LV. Collected and edited by Walter Jekyll with an introduction by Alice Werner and appendices on Traces of African Melody In Jamaica by C.S. Myers and on English Airs And Motifs In Jamaica by Lucy E. Broadwood. One of the best of the Folk Lore Society series. Full of the simple associative tunes and lyrics of a people whose songs and song subjects were "primitive" in the very best sense of the world and which express a truly different view on the world. This volume is very clean and tight with bright gilt initials of the Fold Lore Society and clear black decorative lines. Spine gilt is clear but slightly dulled. Interior is very fresh and crisp. This is an exlibrary copy but not heavily marked. Blanked bookplate on front pastedown and sticker remains on rear pastedown. A few stamps and notations to half title page and small label on spine. Despite the library markings a very handsome and well preserved copy of this desirable title. SCARCE..
