INSCRIBED along bottom left side of title-page by Lawrence ("To Charles Harris Jacob Lawrence 10/1/87"). Charles F. Harris is a pioneering African American editor who had worked for many years in the white publishing world. He founded Amistad Press Inc. in 1986 to focus on African American writers and themes. This book appears to have been signed on the day that the Jacob Lawrence retrospective exhibition opened at the Brooklyn Museum.
