About This Item
Good. Stereoview on orange and pink mount. Stereoview measures 4" x 7". No photographer information. Previous owner has written on verso: "Joseph E. Pilcher Store, Las Vegas, N.M. 1880". Mount has minor chipping and moderate soiling; photograph has moderate soiling. Overall good. A great image of late 19th century Las Vegas, New Mexico. Las Vegas was an old settlement, established in 1835 with a Mexican land grant. The town started to grow after the establishment of the Santa Fe Trail and when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway arrived in 1879, Las Vegas was the largest city between Independence, Missouri and San Francisco. Lawlessness was at its peak around 1880; the railroad brought folks of all sorts including some notorious names like Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Hoodoo Brown and Dave Mather. This image depicts a respectable-looking group of men, and one woman, standing in front "J. E. Pilcher's General Store." The store was housed in a large canvas tent. A great shot by an unknown photographer. .
