About This Item
Mainz: in der Grosherzogl. Hessischen Hofmusikhandlung von B. Schott Söhnen [PN 1825], 1823. Oblong folio. Disbound. [1] (title), 2-74 pp. Engraved.
Early signature and London address in black ink to upper margin of title.
Slightly worn; trimmed; minor show-through; several leaves slightly creased; signature to title cropped. Lacking violin part. Probable first edition of the violin and piano arrangement. Scarce. Jähns p. 305. OCLC no. 314784706.
A "Romantic" opera in three acts, with a libretto by Kind (after Apel and Laun's Gespensterbuch), Der Freischütz was premiered at the Schauspielhaus in Berlin on June 18, 1821. It "has held the stage uninterruptedly. This may be attributed largely to Weber's extraordinary ability to judge the effectiveness of his music in the theatre and to his gift for combining musical substance with accessibility. Almost every number of the opera still speaks to its audiences with refreshing vigour and directness." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online.
