Todd 140Aa.Set in England in the Middle Ages, this work marked a shift away from Scott's prior practice of setting stories in Scotland, and ultimately became one of Scott's best-known and most influential novels.With all half titles and fly-titles present, and with the editor's advertisement leaf to volume I. Bound without the three page catalogue to the rear of volume III.Former owner's inscription to front blank of volume I, and to front free endpaper of volumes II and III.The first edition of this classic work of historical fiction. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant losses of leather and rubbing to back strips of volumes I and II, with losses to volume I resulting in obscured title and volume number. Losses of paper to rear board of volume I, and front board of volume III. Rear joints of volumes I and III starting, and firmly held. Hinges strained, but holding firm. Former owner's inscription to front blank of volume I, and to front free endpaper of volumes II and III. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with instances of light spotting and handling marks throughout each volume, and the odd small tide mark to perimeters of first few leaves of volume III. Good

Synopsis

Published in 1820 by author Sir Walter Scott, Ivanhoe is an influential historical romance novel set in medieval England. Ivanhoe represents a departure from Scott’s other novels, and remains his most well-known work. Scott explores many different themes in Ivanhoe, chief among them the rivalry and tension between the Saxons and Normans, feudal injustice as well as the oppression of England’s Jewish communities at the time. Critical reception was very positive at the time of publication, and Scott is credited with renewing interest in medieval England, leading to the publication of other novels set during the Dark Ages. The novel is also noteworthy for being historically accurate, correctly noting key figures and events of the time. In addition, Ivanhoe is also credited with expanding interest in the mythical Robin Hood, who Scott characterized as a cheerful and noble bandit.
