About This Item
London: T Cadell et al., 1830. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 6". None. The second issue of the first edition thus of this long poem by the Romantic Samuel Rogers. With the vignettes on p88 and 91 correctly placed, unlike the first issue. Samuel Rogers was an English poet and was much celebrated in his lifetime. However, his fame has since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. Italy was his final work, and came into being from the diary of his tour around Italy in 1814. It was Rogers' longest work with the first part being published anonymously in 1822 and the second in 1828. Upon a poor reception Rogers enlarged and revised the poem and commissioned illustrations from J M W Turner, Thomas Stothard and Samuel Proud. That is the edition presented here. In full morocco with a gilt motif to the boards, and gilt titles to the spine. Externally very smart with some rubbing to the extremities and spine. Internally, with the odd spot here and there, and firmly bound. Very Good
