About This Item

London: G. Allen & Unwin, 1977. Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hardcover. Very good cloth copy in a good if somewhat edge-torn (with some loss) and dust-dulled dust wrapper, now mylar-sleeved. Remains quite well-preserved overall. Provenance: ex-library copy. Physical description: 176 pages; 22 cm. Contents: The Union -- The Siamese twins -- Disaffection -- The new nationalism -- The new state -- The new economy -- Old lamps for new. Summary: When the first edition was published in 1967, it was acknowledged as a notable addition to the literature available to the student interested in Irish history and development. This new edition not only uses that earlier material, which has been amended and brought up to date, but also contains a new concluding section which offers an insight into events up to 1973. This terminal date has been selected because it can be seen in two separate ways as a critical point in the Anglo-Irish political relationship. In 1972 both countries determined upon becoming members of the EEC, and the Northern Ireland parliament was suspended. The author contends that the last remnant of the Act of Union may have been placed under death-sentence then and that, if that is the case, 1972 will prove to be the closing entry in a ledger which reads, 1801, 1922, 1972. Subjects: Ireland History 19th century. Ireland History 20th century. Ireland History The Union. Ireland, 1800-1972. Ireland. Irish history. Nationalism. Economic conditions. Genre: History.
