About This Item

London: C. Arthur Pearson,, 1897. The fact is, I'm all here: head, hands, legs, and all the rest of it, but it happens I'm invisible. It's a confounded nuisance, but I am First edition in book form. Originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897, this novel was influential in establishing Wells's reputation as the "father of science fiction" (McConnell, p. 41). The story had a major impact on popular culture, with over 30 movie and TV series adaptations since the 1930s. It was referenced in an episode of Tom and Jerry, it inspired the famous song by Queen with the same title, and was adapted into a comic book by Marvel Comics in 1976. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, black illustration on front cover in black. Extremities rubbed, spine slightly toned, scattered small splash marks and some discolouration to front cover, contents mildly toned, a little shaken, clean throughout: a very good copy. Currey p. 520; Hammond B4; Wells Soc. 11. Frank McConnell, The Science of Fiction and the Fiction of Science, 2009.

Synopsis

Invisible Man is a novel written by HG Wells, first published as a serial in  Pearson's Weekly  in 1897 before being published as a book by C. Arthur Pearson in 1897. The story follows the scientist Griffith, who through experimentation has become the Invisible Man of the title.  Griffith's initial, almost comedic, adventures are soon overshadowed by the bizarre streak of terror he unleashes upon the inhabitants of a small village, and the novel is noted for its horror, suspense and psychological nuance.
