About This Item

Condition: Very Good+, Very Good dust jacket. First Edition, fourth printing, price-clipped. Hardcover, cloth covered boards. Negligible bumping and rubbing. Tiny red and black seal on front paste down end paper that reads "A. E. Esch & Co Ltd. Booksellers, Edmonton Alberta" with slight red stain opposite. The iconic dust jacket, designed by Avant Garde artist E. McKnight Kauffer, really pops. A wonderful copy, scarce with dust jacket in this condition. Presents beautifully. More photos, or video, available on request.

Ellison's only novel published during his lifetime, Invisible Man touches on the social, philosophical, and political experiences of African-Americans in the early 20th century, notable for its use of absurdism and Black existentialism. It won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction in 1953.

Synopsis

Even though Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man is sometimes featured on banned books lists, it remains a consistent staple on many high school reading curriculums. In the novel, Ellison laments the feeling of hopelessness and invisibility that many Black men experience in the United States, and it elegantly explores the themes of racism and bigotry in ways that are both unsettling and accessible.
