First American hardcover edition, published by John w. Luce, 1912. First published in France as 'Introduction A La Metaphysique' in 1903. This is the English language translation by Sidney Littman. Bergson here explains his philosophy on metaphysics, as well as epistemology and intuition. 108 pages, 5" X 7-3/4". Dark red colored cloth covered boards, with the title and author name on the front cover and spine. No dust jacket. Edge wear and some frayying to the head and heel of the spine. Slight edge wear to the tips of the corners. Bottom right corner has a slight diagonal bump and crease at the tip. All lettering on the cover boards is legible. Concave bump mark to the spine panel. Protective tissue sheet for the frontispiece portrait is intact. Dark blue top-stain appears as though it has some fading. Couple dots of staining at the top edge. Rough edges to the text block fore edge. Binding is tight and square. Small vintage bookstore label for Brentano's New York on the bottom edge of the back paste-down. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Not a library discard copy. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.

[4], 3-108, [2] pp. Bound in maroon cloth with lettering and horizontal rules in gold on the front board and the spine, light brown topstain. Frontispiece portrait of Bergson with tissue guard. Lacks the dust jacket. First translated into English by Sydney Littman. Gunter 36. This essay was originally published in French in 1903 and it marked the beginning of Bergson's rise to fame and his influence on both philosophy and literature. William James was one of those influenced by this essay and he became a supporter and admirer of Bergson. The essay was later included in Bergson's final collection La Pensée et le mouvant [The Creative Mind] and is one of the cornerstone works in Bergson's philosophy. Bergson won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927 "in recognition of his rich and vitalizing ideas and the brilliant skill with which they have been presented." A beautiful copy of an uncommon book.
