With frontispiece and 23 plate illustrations. Collated, complete.Features a former owner's inscription, 'D. L. Cumming', and some line mark annotations in margins with same pen. 8 pages of publisher's catalogue. Dated c.1883 with LibraryHub. First edition thus in single volume.Originally published in 4 volumes 1837-1839, this is English historian Henry Hallam's complete record of European literature from the fifteenth to seventeenth century. An extensive introduction also details the general state of literature from the middle ages to the end of the fourteenth century. With chapters on classical literature, theology, science and philosophy and in places a subdivision of works into poetry, drama and 'polite literature'. In publisher's original full cloth binding. Front and rear boards bright with minor bumping to extremities. Spine faded, with bumping to head and tail. Tape reinforcements to front and rear hinges. Pen inscription on verso of front free end papers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with some spotting throughout. Spotting most concentrated on first few pages. Pen annotations to odd pages throughout, not affecting text. Binding cord visible to the rear of the book, on first page of publisher's adverts. Very Good
