About This Item
Amsterdam: Louis de Lorme 1695 First French edition, published the same year as the English original edition. Contemporary calf, gilt spine with reddish-brown morocco label. . Octavo, in fours. Frontisportrait and twenty-four plates of English kings Front joint beginning to crack near head of spine. A very good copy. Sir William Temple (1628-99) served as envoy to Brussels in 1666, and effected the triple alliance among England, Holland, and Sweden in order to protect Spain from France. He was also instrumental in bringing about the marriage of William of Orange to Mary. He composed his history of England, which concludes with William the Conqueror, to encourage the production of a general history of England. Though it abounds in historical errors, the prose style is characteristically felicitous. Samuel Johnson spoke of Temple as the first writer to give cadence to the English language.
