About This Item

119+[ad] pages with table and diagrams. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter red cloth with black lettering to spine. From the library of Pieter Feenstra Kuiper. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5361) First edition.

In the Scheveningen tournament of 1923 a new idea was tried out. Ten home players played against ten foreign masters in succession. A similar scheme was employed six years later at the Ramsgate Practice Team tournament which was won by Capablanca. There was no World Champion or former World Champion at Scheveningen but there were several grandmasters from abroad and in addition the Dutch team was headed by a young player, Euwe, who was to become World Champion some twelve years later. With the tenth foreign player, Muffang of France, being prevented from coming, the Dutch player Strick van Linschoten stepped into the breach. Surprisingly the Swiss master Paul Johner tied with Spielmann for first place. Euwe and Speyer did best of the Dutch players but they did not quite manage to score 50%. The leading scores were P Johner, Spielmann 8 1/2; Cole, Maroczy and Reti 8, Mieses and Yates 7. (Golombek Encyclopedia of Chess).

Pieter Feenstra Kuiper (09-08-1888 - 22-10-1969) was a Dutch a two mover composer and is famous for his book about half-pins written in two volumes in 1947 and 1956: Het Half-Pin Thema. He also wrote the 7th volume of the seriesProbleemcomponisten of Dr. Niemeijer, dedicated to van Dijk's works, and a history of chess De natuurlijke historie van de schaker. He was also a collector of works on chess and hisCatalogue of the chess library formed by the late Dr. P. Feenstra Kuiper at Hilversum, Holland is on file in the Cleveland Public Library.
